Supplemental Security Income is a federal program that was designed
to augment income and provide cash for basic needs to elderly (65 years
or older), blind, or disabled individuals who have little or no income.
To be eligible for SSI benefits, a person must meet all of the following conditions:
- Have limited or no income
- Have limited or no resources
- Be a U.S. citizen or national
- Be a resident of the U.S.
- Not be absent from the country for a full calendar month
- Agree to apply for any other cash benefits to which they’re eligible
- Meet certain additional requirements
